Lovers of the arts are in their element in the Upper Rhine Valley. A number of museums throughout the region celebrate the spirit of technical innovation: the draisine, the forerunner of the bicycle is honoured in Karlsruhe, the history of clock making and cuckoo clocks in Furtwangen, and in Mulhouse the focus is on fabric printing and the history of automobiles and railways. A wide spectrum of artistic treasures are on display at the Kunstmuseum in Basel, the Museum Unterlinden in Colmar and the Augustinermuseum in Freiburg. The strongholds of modern art are the Frieder Burda Museum in Baden-Baden, the Würth Museum in Erstein and the Fondation Beyeler in Basel-Riehen. In Basel and Strasbourg there are museums specifically dedicated to the famous contemporary artists Jean Tinguely and Tomi Ungerer. Personal interaction is top of the agenda in Karlsruhe’s Center for Art and Media (ZKM), while a striking architectural feature is the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein. A lively evening of theatre can be enjoyed by visiting the artistically impressive establishments in Basel, Freiburg, Mulhouse, Strasbourg and Karlsruhe, while grand performances dominate the programmes of the Festspielhaus in Baden-Baden and the Festhalle in Landau.
