Castle Haut-Koenigsbourg

The Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle in the heart of Alsace is nowadays one of the most beautiful castles in France!

The signature silhouette of the Haut-Koenigsbourg has been a landmark of the Alsatian countryside for almost 900 years. Built on an rocky outcrop 757 meters above the ground in the heart of the Vosges Mountains, it is a must-see for those wishing to understand regional, French, and European history. The first impression will leave you spellbound, the pink sandstone of the beautiful and powerful Haut-Koenigsbourg visible even from afar. The castle reigns over the Alsace Plain and the Alsace Wine Route that winds through the landscape. On a clear day, one can even see the Black Forest and the mighty peaks of the Alps. The castle has had to survive much due to the region’s turbulent history. It belonged to three major German Imperial dynasties in a row: the Hohenstaufen, the Habsburgs, and the Hohenzollern. It sometimes even fell into the hands of enemies. After it was allowed to fall into ruin for more than two centuries, it was finally completely restored at the behest of a German emperor in the 15th century and is now one of the most marvelous mountain fortresses of our time.

Today, nearly half a million people visit the castle every year. Guided tours, playful tours guided by medieval characters, unusual tours, audio guides, family workshops: all of these offers and more are designed to suit the needs of the most diverse groups of visitors.
