Currency
The common currency in Germany and France is the euro, whereas Switzerland uses Swiss francs.
Euros are occasionally accepted in Switzerland as well, but Swiss francs are rarely accepted in France or Germany. We recommend being prepared to pay in the appropriate currency in each country; simply keep a small amount of euros and Swiss francs in cash on you at all times. Larger sums of money can be easily exchanged after arrival or directly withdrawn from one of the many ATMs. Most credit cards (Visa, MasterCard) are accepted in larger cities, stores, and hotels. Please be aware that some tourist destinations and rural areas within the Upper Rhine Valley tend to operate on a cash-only basis, which is also often the case for smaller stores and local markets, e.g. Christmas markets, farmers’ markets, etc.
