Karlsruhe, the city in the shape of a fan
Legend has it that Margrave Karl Wilhelm of Baden-Durlach was overcome by fatigue while hunting and lay down under a tree for a nap. He dreamed of a city where the streets extend outwards from a magnificent central palace like the spokes of a fan. In 1715 the Margrave decided to build his new residence in the middle of the Hardtwald forest, at the time an impenetrable wilderness. An octag-onal tower was built in the centre of the palace complex – the geometrical focal point of the sym-metric whole. Thirtytwo streets and paths radiate from this point like the rays of the sun. www.karlsruhe-tourism.de/en
